What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are restorative treatments used to repair minor tooth fractures, decay, or damaged surfaces. By removing decay and filling the cavity or defect, fillings restore the tooth’s structure, function, and appearance, helping prevent further infection or damage.

Types of Dental Fillings

  1. Composite (Tooth-Colored) Fillings

    • Made from resin and glass.

    • Bonds directly to tooth and matches natural color.

    • Popular for visible teeth and small-to-moderate restorations.

  2. Amalgam (Silver) Fillings

    • Durable alloy of mercury, silver, tin, and copper.

    • Cost-effective and long-lasting; used primarily in back teeth.

    • Noticeable in color compared to natural teeth.

  3. Ceramic/Porcelain Fillings

    • Extremely aesthetic, strong, and resistant to staining.

    • More costly; used in visible/front teeth or larger restorations.

  4. Glass Ionomer Fillings

    • Blend of glass and acrylic.

    • Releases fluoride; used for children, non-biting surfaces, or near gums.

  5. Gold Fillings

    • Longest-lasting, biocompatible, but highly visible and more expensive.

  6. Temporary Fillings

    • Used as an interim solution before a permanent restoration.

Dental Filling Procedure

1. Examination and Diagnosis

  • Dentist assesses tooth with clinical evaluation and sometimes X-rays.

2. Anesthesia/Numbing

  • Local anesthetic is administered for pain-free treatment.

3. Decay Removal and Cavity Prep

  • All decayed or damaged tissue is carefully removed using a drill or laser.

4. Cleaning and Disinfection

  • Tooth cavity is cleaned to eliminate any bacteria or debris.

5. Filling Placement

  • Selected material is layered into the cavity, shaped to restore natural contour, and hardened (often with a curing light for composite/polymer types).

6. Shaping and Polishing

  • The filling is trimmed, smoothed, and polished for comfort, fit, and appearance.

Regular visits to the dentist offer numerous benefits for maintaining optimal oral health. They help in early detection of issues like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer.
